New York Magazine

At New York Magazine, I had the opportunity to create show graphics and explainer videos for its verticals Vulture, the Cut, Intelligencer, and Grub Street.

Here are some of my favorites.

The Illustrated 30,000 Year Evolution of the Sex Toy

Sex toys have a long and turbulent history, which stretches back almost 30,000 years when our ancestors “hunched over carving eight-inch-long penises out of siltstone.” Hallie Lieberman’s new book, Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy, takes readers through the colorful backstories of humanity’s favorite playthings. Watch the video above for an illustrated primer on ancient phalluses, Victorian-era vibrators (disguised as wrinkle-removers), and America’s first prosthetic penises manufactured by an enterprising ventriloquist.

I designed and animated this explainer for The Cut. I modeled the vibrators in Cinema 4D and used Element 3D to bring them into AfterEffects.

The Dark Side of the Sun

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with an estimated 9,500 Americans diagnosed every day. Though the danger varies depending on skin type, too much exposure to harmful UV rays puts all people at risk of skin cancer. Here’s the truth about tanning and cumulative exposure to the sun.

This was an animated explainer I pitched to The Cut. I designed and animated everything in AfterEffects.

The Rise and Fall of the Vampire Romance Craze

Vampires have been a symbol of seduction for almost 300 years, but they haven’t always been the sex symbols we know today. The earliest vampires were subject of myth and folklore and were strictly considered to be demons and beasts. So how did we go from that to teenage heartthrobs like Edward from the 'Twilight' saga? Let's take a look back.

I pitched, wrote, voiced, animated, edited, and sound designed this explainer for Vulture.

Rick and Morty X Vulture: A Trip to the ‘Spongebob Universe Show’

Vulture sat down with the co-creators of Rick and Morty, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, along with producer Ryan Ridley, and voice actors Spencer Grammer (Summer), and Sarah Chalke (Beth), and asked them to improvise an episode in a Spongebob-like world. In this Vulture-animated short, Rick and Morty overlook a domestic dispute between Sponge-eons, and are interrupted by guest appearances from underwater heroes from both the DC and Marvel universe.

I drew and rigged the Rick and Morty characters in AfterEffects and animated the cartoon shots to this Vulture video that had been previously shot at a convention. The characters’ faces were rigged with Joysticks'n'Sliders and their bodies with Duik.

How Far is Hollywood From Achieving Equality?

A handful of female nominees does not signal an end to Hollywood’s history of exclusion. Dr. Stacy Smith, the founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, explains Frances McDormand's mention of inclusion riders and what they could mean for inclusion in film.

I designed and animated this video before the 2018 Oscars, and we redid the beginning afterwards to reflect Frances McDormand’s speech referencing ‘inclusion riders.’ This was done in AfterEffects. I regularly refer back to this video for the statistics at the end of what an accurate portrayal of real-world diversity would look like.

The IUD is Making a Comeback

The IUD is the most effective form of birth control. But it hasn’t always been the most popular, especially in the United States. Here’s a brief look at the IUD’s complicated history, and why IUD usage is suddenly rising.

I designed and animated this explainer for The Cut. Everything was designed and animated in AfterEffects, and the cellphone was animated using Element 3D.
